Silver and White Fondant Hantaran Nikah Cuppies for Cik Wanie Zaaba

Vanilla cupcake with buttercream filling and fondant decor. New friend Wanie ordered these silver and white mini cuppies for her cousin's hantaran nikah. I used storebought white roses and painted non-toxic edible silver paint on the edges. I prefer to use storebought roses when the weather's wet as handmade ones are unpredictable in humid condition. There's an incident with the roses. At the last minute I realized that my roses were not enough, rushed to the store but it was closed (I forgot it's Agong's birthday). Frantically I went home and made seven white fondant roses (fortunately it was a hot Saturday!), and finished the decor, all in one hour to meet the promised dateline. Phewww... Couldn't tell the difference between the handmade and storebought flowers! To add some soft touches, I added some satin and organza silver ribbons. I simply love the finished result, it all worked out as planned and more... I hope Wanie and her cousin love the cuppies as much as I do!

Hantaran Bertunang Buttercream Cupcakes for Norzalina

My friend Nor asked me if I could do buttercream cuppies for engagement hantaran about a month ago. It's been quite some time since I last did buttercream hantaran cuppies, lately the hantaran cuppies ordered had been fondant. Naturally I said yes. I always think doing buttercream cupcakes are more fun yet less fussy. For hantaran buttercream cuppies, I always use crusting buttercream, as they are more "durable" and won't easily smear.
The theme was brown and gold. I made chocolate butter cupcakes in 2.25" solo cup for this hantaran. To match the theme, I used brown, cream, white, yellow and a dash of green. I ordered the custom gold box from fellow baker Anita.
I woke up at 4am today and started baking the cuppies. It has now become a regular affair for me to wake up in the wee hours to finish my orders, eversince superbibik went back to Indonesia for holiday. I would retire to bed early the night before. I set a timeline for myself so I will not waste time as I promised Nor that the cuppies will be ready by 8am. They were all ready by 7.30am, and Nor arrived as I was cleaning up. I am glad that Nor was happy with the cuppies, I am very happy with the final result.

Baiti's Fondant Hantaran Bertunang Cuppies

Baiti was a returning customer. She ordered 30 pcs of hantaran fondant cuppies for 3rd March pickup. The colour theme was pink. I made the cuppies in an assortment of designs. Some I made with "handkerchiefs" some with imprints, some with tiny floral details. My favourite were the kebaya nyonya cuppies, I made the base in cream colour and drew the floral "embroidery" patterns with pink icing.

Although the main colour was pink, I decided to add a little bit of contrast by adding little purple flowers. I'm glad I did, or it would've been somewhat too monotonous with just pink flowers. Baiti later told me that her family were all pleased  with the cuppies and they were all finished even before the kenduri started (other than the ones set aside for the hantaran), I hope she had a bite of the cuppies before they were gone!

Hantaran Bertunang Cupcakes for Shahariah

My friend Sha booked me a month early to do these cupcakes for her brother's engagement. The theme was green and white, with a dash of gold. I baked orange flavoured butter cupcakes and made the roses 2 days ahead. Kept the cupcakes in the fridge until the nite before delivery. I like the peace and quiet of the wee hours to do my cakes and to get inspiration for the design. Since it was Saturday, I rose at 4am to decorate the cuppies and finished at 10.30am, the cuppies arrived just in time at Sha's Setapak Jaya house.

It's a Saturday (12 Feb 2011) I won't forget. After dropping the cuppies, I took the children for brunch at our favourite mamak restaurant after which we went straight home. Right after 11.30am my niece Farrah came over to pick up her steamed fruitcake and baked cheesecake. Around this time I "chatted" a bit with my aunt, Makcik on Facebook. At around 12.30pm I dozed off and slept until 3.30pm. I had just finished my late lunch when I received a call from my mother who told me that Uncle Carl (Makcik's husband) had passed away earlier. It was a shock to me because I had just chatted with Makcik right before I went to sleep.

Uncle Carl was a wonderful person. He was thoughtful and kind especially to my children. He adored them and they adored him, which was why Sham and I always had a soft spot for him. He was very supportive of GG Home Biz, always encouraging and motivating. Now when I make my classic carrot cake, I will always think of him. It was his favourite. Thank you Uncle Carl for coming into our lives, even for a short time. Thank you for bringing us all together. I will always cherish the memories we had with you. Al-Fatihah...

Hantaran Bertunang Cake for Wahidatunnisa

Wahid was an old schoolmate and hostel-mate from my Seremban days. She messaged me about 3 weeks ago to order a hantaran tunang cake for her sister. Initially the colour theme was green and white, then one week ago Wahid called to inform that the colour theme had changed to pink and cream. Fortunately I haven't started with the roses as I was still thinking of a design for the cake.

I started with the project on Hari Wilayah holiday, baked the 8" vanilla butter cake in the morning. While it cooled, I started with the pink flowers, leaves and white fillers. I decided to make 8 medium sized roses for a small bouquet to be arranged on top of the cake. I left them to dry for a few hours. Later in the evening, I started with covering the cake with cream coloured fondant. While arranging the pink roses I realised that I didn't have enough flowers to fill out the bouquet, so anxiously I made more roses (at the same time hoping that they would quickly harden). I had to work the next day and did not intend to stay up all night to do the cake.

I thought it would be nice to add more colours to the bouquet too, not contrasting ones, just a bit of pastel yellow and cream hues. First I made 5 yellowish cream roses, and guess what, they were still not enough. At the last minute I made 3 more light cream flowers. In all, I made 16 roses for this cake, and in record time (one and half hours for the 2nd batch)! I had wanted to make a simple bouquet but it ended up to be quite an elaborate one because I made the roses too small. Makcik dropped by as I was finishing up. She suggested that I add a bit of detail at the foot of the cake. She loved the royal icing dots that I did on a previous fondant cake, hence the dainty polka dot border. Thanks for the great suggestion Makcik! The cake was finally finished at 11pm.

For all the exasperation, I was very pleased with the end result. It was all trial and error, which I will definitely take note for future projects. I learn new things every time I make a new design, the challenges made cake decorating all the more exciting for me. Wahid, thanks ya for believing in me. Great to see you again!
